Overlooking the Pacific off the Point Loma peninsula near San Diego, CA
Introduction
In 2024, I embarked on my first road trip. Over 10 days I drove almost 2,500 miles across 7 states capturing the natural beauty of the western United States. Some of the highlights include the Black Hills of South Dakota, driving I-90 across Montana and seeing the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Since I was in high school, I had wanted to do a road trip across the country, but the finances and timing hadn't aligned. Taking this smaller trip rekindled my desire to embark on a cross-country adventure, even if it meant I'd be going alone.
This past summer, the stars aligned for this dream of mine to come true. Through June and July, I drove nearly 7,000 miles from coast to coast, passing through 20 states in total. I visited presidential homes, watched baseball games at 4 different ballparks, toured 3 state capital buildings and visited a plethora of other historical sites. Some might say I'm crazy for doing this trek by myself, and I'd be inclined to agree with you. I'm so crazy that I drove across the country again in December as I moved from Colorado to North Carolina. Both of these trips were ambitious feats, but I'm grateful I had the opportunity to make it happen.
Traveling is the best way to keep the mind open to ideas and possibilities. Whether you travel domestically or globally, the horizon expands with every mile passed. Without leaving the comfort of your home, you have no idea what lies in the great beyond. In a good way, traveling to other places should leave you surprised one way or another.
I'm starting Journey Journal Adventures as my way of sharing my love for travel, history and providing tips to those who want to go on that next adventure but don't know where to begin. Not only will this be a blog about traveling and history, but it will be one that shares encouragement on how to navigate the road of life. Because we all know how difficult it can be to stay on the road from time to time. With time this blog will expand, but for now I'll keep things simple and share my experiences. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey ahead.
Sincerely,
Stephen J. Gossman, Author
